Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter

Here at SOCIALight, we have remained quiet on the topic of what is currently happening in America. But as a liberal magazine that roots for the underdog, we felt we had to pen a response to the current situation and the times we are living in. Because this is history. This is history our kids will learn about in the future, this is something that won’t be forgotten or swept under the rug, and this is something that should mark the beginning of a change in the world we currently live in.

Instead of writing about how upset we are watching the footage of the way black people are being treated by police, how devastating the video of George Floyd’s death is and how disgusting the president is for adding fuel to a fire, instead, we can use our white privilege to help spread the message that black people need help spreading. It is our duty to help inform, educate and provide trustworthy resources to others to help make change happen.

We will never know what it is like to be racially discriminated against for the colour of our skin. We will never know what it is like to feel the fear of interacting with law enforcement that should be there to protect us. We will never know what it is like to live a black life… but we do know that we stand with all black people in solidarity. Because Black Lives Matter.

For now, we are happy to sit down and shut up about this issue that we are often ignorant about. Instead we are going to use the time to educate ourselves, learn and find out how we can assist in the #blacklivesmatter movement.

Below we have linked to a range of resources that can help educate you on the racism happening in the world, links to charities that are working to do something about it and sharing information about the current protests happening in America.
